Every so often, a property comes along that perfectly captures San Francisco’s past and present — and 3743-43B 20th Street is one of those rare finds. (It's not our listing, but the team members at Pacific Edge are among some of our favorite colleagues.)
Built in 1865 for shipwright Edward Doyle, this architecturally significant Victorian showcases the kind of craftsmanship we almost never see anymore. Its rare balloon-frame construction — continuous redwood timbers running from foundation to roof — has kept it strong for more than 160 years, even as the city evolved around it. Together with its twin at 3747, it stands as one of the oldest surviving homes on Liberty Hill — a living chapter of San Francisco history.
The setting couldn’t be more ideal: just half a block from Dolores Park, on a beautiful tree-lined stretch of 20th Street where utilities are tucked underground and the architectural eye candy never quits. From here, you can wander to Valencia Street’s best cafés and shops or hop on the J-Church to reach Noe Valley, the Castro, or downtown.
I know this block well — I sold 3746 20th Street across the street this spring, setting a record price for the neighborhood. (You can read that story and learn more about this remarkable enclave here.) It’s a truly special corner of the city — a place where neighbors know one another and the evening light makes everything glow.
Originally a single-family home, 3743 was thoughtfully reimagined as two flats in the 1920s. The south-facing lot ensures wonderful natural light throughout the day, especially across the rear decks and garden.
If you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to own a piece of authentic, old-San-Francisco soul in one of its most walkable neighborhoods, don’t miss this one.
