Stop Obsessing Over the Kitchen

We know you like to cook. And it’s true that the kitchen is where everybody tends to congregate during any type of gathering. Yes, open shelving is cute. Yes, a six-burner range is satisfying. But unless you’re secretly auditioning for Top Chef, maybe it’s time to stop fetishizing the kitchen and turn your attention to the room that actually can change your life: Your bedroom.

This is where you restore your mind, body, and ambition. It’s where your day begins and ends — and where intimacy, connection, rest and pleasure get to take center stage.

If you’re managing a home around what truly nourishes you (hint: it’s not another Le Creuset pot), start here.

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary — a place where your nervous system can downshift, your body can soften, and your spirit can exhale. Here’s how to create a space that truly nourishes:

Start with the light. Overhead glare has no place here. Opt for soft, layered lighting: warm bulbs, dimmers, and bedside lamps that glow gently. Candlelight or string lights can add a calming shimmer.

Treat yourself to bedding that loves you back. Choose sheets that feel luxurious against your skin — linen, percale, or sateen — and pillows that cradle you like a cloud. A well-made bed invites deep rest.

Clear the clutter. Make space for stillness by removing distractions. This isn’t the room for your laptop, laundry piles, or financial paperwork. Let this room say only rest lives here.

Surround yourself with soothing textures. Incorporate natural fibers — cotton, wool, silk — that invite the senses to soften. Add a cozy throw, a plush rug, or soft curtains to mute the world.

Curate calm. Bring in elements that feel personal and peaceful: a piece of art that makes you breathe easier, a favorite book on the nightstand, a soft scent that signals bedtime. Let every detail whisper welcome home.

Your power doesn't live in a sous vide! Realtors, designers and architects specialize in selling people (particularly women) on dreamy kitchens.

And society teaches us to measure our worth in square footage of quartz and the quality of our countertop appliances. But there’s another way!

Your power lives in your rest. In your pleasure. In the way you say, “This space is mine.”

So go ahead. Let the kitchen be functional. But let the bedroom be fabulous.

A roast chicken is delicious — but it’s gone in an hour and working its way through your digestive tract. A peaceful bedroom? That’s real nourishment.
